Vacation!….and a mustache

As my good friend Shmulik recently said to me, “You must have set a record for vacation days in the army.” I agree.

I finished my two week hebrew course and reported back to base on Sunday to find out what my job would be for the next three weeks until the draft. When I arrived on Sunday I basically sat around until 8 p.m. waiting for my officer to tell me what to do. Once she arrived, she had no idea, so she told me to come back the next day.

The following day, it took me until about 4 p.m. to see her and once again, there was nothing for me to do. I told her that I had been in a similar situation at the Bakom, where I was placed somewhere for a short period of time and understood that there wasn’t much for me to do. She explained that she couldn’t just let me go sit at home, but I was able to persuade her that I’m a lone soldier and have things to take care of and It’d make more sense for me to be at home until the draft.

So here I am, on Vacation for three weeks. So far I have been spending it studying and working out. It’s only been a few days, but hopefully I can keep it up. That’s pretty much it. Once I’m drafted into Nahal, the blog will get more interesting….I hope.

Oh yeah, so I just found out that a group of people, from Australia I believe, started this trend called “Movember” where you grow a mustache for the month of November to show support for Prostate Cancer. Thus, I have decided to grow a mustache for the remainder of the month. I discovered this on ESPN.com while reading about New York Yankee Rightfielder Nick Swisher growing a mustache for the cause. Click here to read about what he’s doing. I know my mustache will look absolutely terrible, but why not? Also, as some of you readers may know, my father has a mustache, for as long as I’ve been around, and in addition to showing my support for Prostate Cancer, I will use this as a chance to see if my mustache can somehow compare with my Dad’s majestic ‘Stache.

I”M SOOOOOO BOREDD

This is how I feel these days, and I too usually don't wear any pants or shirts anymore

Well nothing new to report besides the fact that I’m bored out of my mind these days, thus I am posting about absolutely nothing. In terms of the Army, I’m not doing anything. I’m just waiting to hear if they will shorten my service, but because of all of the holidays, I doubt they have even looked at my case. Awesome.

I’ve been watching a lot of the Sopranos and How I Met Your Mother lately. Next I’ll start Mad Men and HBO’s The Wire. At least I have time to catch up on all the good shows I have missed over the years. I’m hoping to return to the States by mid December or early January.

My Dad suggested I start writing down possible career paths. This is what I have so far (I just list everything that comes to mind, not everything is realistic, obviously):

– FBI

– Police Officer

– Beg an MLB franchise to give me some job

– Insurance

– Journalist

-Inventor

-Teacher (preferably History with a side of being a baseball coach)

– Write a book

– Bartender (Tom Cruise in “Cocktail” style)

– Architect

– Jewish Mafia

– Win the Lottery and buy the Israeli Army and force them to let me be a combat soldier

I personally like the idea of winning the lottery the best, but instead of the army thing, I think I’d try and buy an Island somewhere. When I figure out how to make a poll, maybe I’ll do that to get some reader interactivity on the site. That may be a few days.

Anyway, I don’t really know what else to say. I should finally be getting rid of my two cats this week. I hate cats. I really don’t like them. Only dogs from here on out. However, they are good at catching cockroaches, so good for them.

Oh yeah, on another note, the NFL season has started and I’m pumped. All I do now is look forward to Sundays. Also, College Football is going on and my former college, The University of Arizona, seems to have a pretty solid team. I have been looking for a college team to call my own for quite some time, so I think I will hop on that bandwagon before it’s too late. Back at my U of A days, I was at the game where Zona upset then undefeated UCLA and everyone stormed the field. Pretty cool. That’s all the rambling I have for now.

Hi Zane

Zane is a loyal reader and fellow soldier in Mikveh Alon and was upset that he has not been mentioned in the Blog. Well Zane, Hello. He is from New Zealand and believes that Sharks and Dolphins are the same animal….I will say no more

Sports Wire New York

Something non-army related. For you New York sports fans out there, there is a great new site that is a must read, it’s called Sports Wire New York. It gives you all the rumors and info you could ever want from all your favorite New York sports teams, Hockey, Baseball, Football, and Basketball. Check it out. It was started by two guys that I actually began my Journalistic career with back in the day. Their names: Jonathan Swirsky and Joshua Scolnic. Two promising sports reporters who will bring you everything you could ever want and need and more. The link is in the blogroll over on the left.

No Posting

Sorry for the lack of posts this weekend. My parents are in town and I just didn’t have much time. However, today is my Mom’s birthday, so Happy Birthday Mom, I love you.

It’s been great having my parents here, but four days just isn’t enough. I’ll be on base for two weeks, so I promise that I will catch up on my posts when I return.

Shalom Mom and Dad

So my mom and dad have come to visit me in Israel and arrived yesterday morning. It’s great to have them here and I got four days off from the army, well really two if you don’t count the weekend. I well spend the next three days with them and then they will attend my induction ceremony into the army on Tuesday.

This past week was probably the best week so far. It actually felt like being in the army as we  went to another base and had to camp out and got to shoot our M-16. It was a fun and tiring week and lasted three days.

So Close

Being as today is more or less over, tomorrow is my last day before the army. It is honestly a day I thought would never come. I find that I’m actually very excited and ready to go in. I’m ready to get going with this chapter of my life and I’m ready and excited to learn. The kick in the butt will be good for me. I’m also looking forward to learning hebrew so I can communicate better with Michelle’s family, instead of sitting with them and not being able to contribute much, even though most of them speak English.

Today, Michelle and I went to pick up my debit/credit card from Bank Leumi. From there, we went to the shook to get some socks, a watch and some sheets for the army. I have pretty much everything else. We then went to get a cell phone for myself. As always, nothing’s easy in this country. I found out that the credit card I have is no good for the phone company Pelephone and that I needed to have the bank sign off that it was fine for the phone company to withdraw money from my account every month (I don’t know if I explained that well, but it’s not really all that important). So, I had to go back and forth from the mall to the bank, which took an additional hour or so. However, I did finally get a phone. It’s more or less, a pay as you go deal and I pay for whatever minutes and texts I use. We left at around 10 this morning and got back to the apartment at around 4 p.m. It was a busy day.
